Learning Objectives

  • 理解”who does what”这一清晰句子的核心结构

IMPORTANT

a negative outcomethe patient’s condition worsened
various factorsthree economic pressures
a significant impactenrollment dropped by 23%

(Nominalization)

make an assessment ofassess
conduct an analysis ofanalyze
come to a conclusionconclude
is an indication ofindicates

  • 弱:said angrily → 强:snapped, snarled, retorted

”Who Does What” 核心

一个清晰的英文句子,其核心结构是 Subject + Verb + Object(谁 + 做了什么 + 对谁/什么)。

There is a tendency among researchers to avoid controversial topics. Researchers tend to avoid controversial topics.

The Great Migration transformed the demographic landscape of every major Northern city. It also changed America itself.(短句放在长句之后,产生强调效果)

(Subordination)

  • Coordination(并列)——用 and, but, or 连接同等重要的想法:The data was inconclusive, but the trend was clear.
  • Subordination(从属)——用 because, although, while, if 把次要想法放到从句中:Although the data was inconclusive, the trend was clear.

Subordination

Periodic Sentence(掉尾句)

The novel is a masterpiece of social commentary, despite its flawed characters. Despite its flawed characters, the novel remains a masterpiece of social commentary.

Cumulative Sentence(累积句)

The professor walked into the room, 累积:a stack of papers under one arm, coffee stains on his sleeve, ready to lecture on a topic he had taught for thirty years.

(Cutting Deadwood)

due to the fact thatbecause
in the event thatif
at this point in timenow
for the purpose ofto
in order toto
is able tocan

Practical Exercises

练习1 — 名词化改动词: 原文:“The implementation of the new policy resulted in an improvement of student performance.”

练习2 — 短句冲击: 将以下一段话中的主要论点用一个短句单独成句: “The study demonstrates that early intervention programs significantly reduce dropout rates, though the effects vary by socioeconomic status and geographic region, suggesting that a one-size-fits-all approach would be insufficient.”

练习3 — “Who does what”: 改写这个”there is”句子: “There was a recognition among the participants that the methodology needed revision.”

1: “Implementing the new policy improved student performance.”

练习2: “The study demonstrates that early intervention programs significantly reduce dropout rates. Context matters. Effects vary by socioeconomic status and geographic region, suggesting that a one-size-fits-all approach would be insufficient.”

练习3: “The participants recognized that the methodology needed revision.”
